Aims of the Website

This website is not intended to be a complete history of any of the subjects or persons contained within. The aim of the site is to showcase the collections of the contributing institutions through a series of case studies which are designed to encourage further investigation.


Timeline Disclaimer

Please note that the coding used to create the timeline requires the entry of a full date including day, month and year. Every effort has been made to correctly ascertain this information for each entry. However it has in some cases proved impossible to do so. Therefore, please note that in some cases where the full information has not been available a decision has been taken as to the events placement on the timeline. Unless stated, when only the year and month are known the entry will be placed on the first of the appropriate month. Where only the year is known the entry will be placed on 1 Janunary of that particular year. Please take this into account when viewing the timeline.

We are committed to providing an accessible website.

Wherever possible, the pages have been designed to meet the Level-AA standard of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). They have been tested for compliance using the Total Validator software.

However, a number of the written documents are illustrated as images taken from electronic scans. The image sizes have been chosen as a compromise for facilitate download on slower internet connections. Transcripts of some of these documents are available on request from the institution that holds the original. Please refer to the Contact Us page for details.

The pages have been written in XHTML 1.0 Transitional and have been tested for validity using the Total Validator software.

The site has been designed for viewing with a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels or greater. It has been tested in a number of different browsers on both the Windows and Mac platforms but if you experience difficulties viewing the pages please contact us.
